I’m sure you’ve seen it. Better yet I’m sure you’ve done it. I know I have. Life gets crazy so you pull through the drive through window of a fast food restaurant to get something to satisfy your appetite for a few hours until you can get home. Then you drive down the road, one hand on the stirring wheel another hand shoving food in your mouth. Sounds familiar? I always laugh when I see drivers eating at the same time. It’s such a picture of our society. In a rush, never having time to truly enjoy something that was meant to give us pleasure.

Perhaps the most misunderstood, most underrated spiritual discipline of the church today is the art of meditation. Now hear me out. Before you go off thinking this is something about sitting Indian style and having your palms up like secular meditation does, this is not it. Christian meditation is not about the posture of our body, it is about the posture of our soul. So many of us claim to read the Bible but it’s like pulling up through the drive-through window of God’s kitchen. We only get the quick filler; but He intended for us to sit down at His dining room table and enjoy the meal with Him.

The missing link in our lives is the practice of meditating on the Word of God. In Joshua 1:8 it says,

“Do not let this Book of Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

This missing link is your answer. God told Joshua to be strong and courageous. How was he going to do that? By meditating on the Word. Could it be that we are not getting the results we need because we are not meditating on the Word of God. Could it be that our prayers are not answered because we simply do not have any substance to pray from?

Meditation bridges the gap between hearing from God and speaking to Him.

So many of us quit reading the Bible and come away so cold from it is because we have not warmed ourselves at the fire of meditation. (Thomas Watson). So through the study of David Mathis I have listed a few practical steps to get us back to that missing link. Hope you are blessed!

  • Begin with reading. Go on with meditation. End in Prayer.
  • Lookout for any phrases, verses, or sections that capture your attention and sit on that for the day.
  • Go into deeper study of it by checking commentaries or other scriptures that relate.
  • Think about how it relates to Jesus and how it relates to you in the moment.
  • Meditation is the best preparation for prayer. Once you have truly relished that scripture reference for the day, several days, or even weeks, offer it back to God and ask Him to seal it in your heart through prayer.
